The Suits & Style of the Eponymous Secret Agent
The new James Bond movie opens in cinemas October 26th with Daniel Craig no doubt once again donning ultra-sharp suits and high-end menswear for his role as the world’s most stylish fictional hero in Spectre.
From Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton to Roger Moore and Daniel Craig, for more than 50 years, the ubiquitous spy Bond has graced the silver screen in snappy ensembles created by some of the world’s greatest costume and fashion designers.
While fashions have changed over the years, Bond’s signature sartorial style has not. Bond fashion expert Matt Spaiser has an entire blog – The Suits of James Bond – devoted to clothing worn by all six Bond actors, as well as other characters. His blog is as expert as they come and examines Bond’s style down to the smallest, important detail.
Classic James Bond Suits
The original James Bond, Sean Connery wears an iconic grey glen check three-piece suit made by Anthony Sinclair in the film Goldfinger. Unusual because it has lapels on the waistcoat, this is one of 20 three-piece suits worn by Bond actors so far.
George Lazenby’s three-piece navy chalk stripe suit in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was created by British tailor Dimi Major. It has three buttons down the front and darted trousers with a slimmer-fit leg.
In Octopussy, Bond dresses for a dinner with Kamal Khan in a black notched lapel dinner suit by Douglas Hayward. Featuring black horn buttons, and button dinner jacket, it is almost identical to one Moore wore in For Your Eyes Only two years earlier.
Perfect for a 007-style wedding, Timothy Dalton wore this British-style morning coat to
Felix Leiter’s wedding in Licence to Kill. The morning suit consists of a morning coat in mid grey with a matching waistcoat and trousers in black and grey stripes. They are usually worn at weddings and at the races.
In The World Is Not Enough, Pierce Brosnan dons a dark charcoal three-piece suit with grey pinstripes, created by Italian fashion house Brioni. Brioni has created Bond’s suits for five of the films, including for Daniel Craig.
Tom Ford suits have become synonymous with the modern James Bond. In Skyfall, Daniel Craig wears a sleek, stylish light grey Tom Ford suit with light pattern detail and pocket square. According The Suits of James Bond, one of the new suits in Spectre will be a three-piece navy herringbone suit by Tom Ford.
The Ivory Dinner Jacket
Sean Connery’s ivory dinner jacket from Goldfinger is surely one of the most iconic Bond looks.
The ivory dinner jacket is part of the black tie dress code, which means it should only be worn after 6pm. Daniel Craig will apparently be donning a Tom Ford number in Spectre.
